dog asleep on the couch
roxy sleeps sprawled sideways,
legs fanned outwards like suburbia.
every so often her tail leaps up and
floats
down again with a thump. she whimpers—
her furry spine pressed against my leg
(belly quietly throbbing)
she claims life with each inhalation
pushing air with her flesh,
lung and muscle dancing under skin
like newlyweds under quilts.
somewhere near are sinews red with life
crawling as spiders onto glowing organs
lift
and settle
lift and settle
as long as breath requires no ratchet or grease,
there is hope for man.
